What is a MIG Welder? A MIG Welder is a welding machine that does the Gas Metal Arc Welding process (GMAW). It was originally referred to (and still is most often), as Metal Inert Gas process (MIG welding). The welding is an arc welding process which uses and automatic feed of a wire electrode that is shielded by an externally supplied gas.
To control the welding process, three pieces of equipment are used: The gun and cable assembly, the wire feed and the MIG welder. Sometimes the wire feeder and MIG welder can be combined into one unit.

The letters ... MIG stand for metal inert gas. Then it was found that carbon dioxide (not inert), works well. Although shielding gas for the MIG welding process is typically carbon dioxide, a mix of argon and carbon dioxide or an argon/oxygen mix, most refer to it as MIG. There is also TIG Welders or Tungsten Inert Gas (TIG) welding.
This welding process is easy to learn. Many hobbiest -- from metal artists to old car restorers -- have their own machine that produces high quality welds. This because it has an all position welding capability, and can be used on materials of various types and thicknesses. Plus, it is very easy to clean-up because there is little to no slag and low spatter.

The MIG welding process is very versatile. It is relatively easy to learn and is used in production welding applications because it is a fast welding process. The shielding gas used depends on what metal is being welded. Great site with very good wlding machine information. Thanks!
